The Northern Cape Tourism Industry
A leading tourism consultancy, Grant Thornton, estimated that the provincial tourism industry in 2005 directly contributed R1.9 billion to the economy. In addition, the industry directly and indirectly contributed R3.3 billion (10.9% of provincial GDP), while the direct, indirect and induced contribution to the provincial GDP was estimated to be R5.3 billion (17.4% of provincial GDP). The latter is expected to increase to 20.5% in 2015, making tourism the most significant economic sector after mining in the Northern Cape.

Grant Thornton estimated that, in 2005, a total of 13 565 jobs can be attributed to the direct impact of travel and tourism in the Northern Cape. It is estimated that this number would grow to 15 802 jobs in 2010, while 36 882 will be attributed to the direct and indirect impact and 59 730 jobs will be attributable to the direct, indirect and induced impact.

Grant Thornton estimated that in 2005 some 111 031 domestic overnight trips were taken within the Northern Cape, while 782 560 overnight trips were taken by domestic tourists originating from the rest of South Africa. At the same time 198 332 foreign arrivals were registered to have visited the Northern Cape.
